The former barracks Gruž, a building typical of the Austro-Hungarian military architecture of the 19th century, was reconstructed, extended and repurposed for the needs of the State Archives in Dubrovnik. The mezzanine structures were additionally reinforced, the roof was renovated and an upgrade was made from steel construction and glass walls.
The works were carried out in the period from 2007 to 2009, after which there was a standstill period until 2018, when the works continued and when the object received its final purpose.
The State Archives in Dubrovnik has thus gained storage space for 8,000 m3 of material in modern equipped archival warehouses, two restoration workshops, a fumigation chamber, rooms for dusting and re-cartoning of materials, and archive office premises. For external users of the archive, the reading room, lecture halls and a dormitory with eleven rooms and one apartment have been arranged.
