The “Former barracks Gruž”, a building typical of Austro-Hungarian military architecture of the 19th century, have been reconstructed, upgraded and converted for the needs of the State Archives in Dubrovnik. The floor structures have been additionally strengthened, the roof structure has been repaired and a superstructure of steel and glass planes has been constructed.
The work was carried out in the period from 2007 to 2009 after which, due to insufficient funds, there was a delay right up to 2018 when work was resumed and when the building was assigned its final purpose.
Thus the State Archives in Dubrovnik have been given a space to store 8000 m¹ items in modernly equipped archive storage areas, two restoration workshops, a fumigation chamber, rooms for dusting and repackaging materials, and archive office premises. For external visitors to the archives a reading room, lecture halls, and a dormitory with eleven rooms and a suite have been renovated.
