Brick Structure – Rijeka

The brick building within the former Rikard Benčić industrial complex was built by the end of the 19th century as a curing plant of the tobacco factory of the time. After World War II, it was converted for the needs of the newly established factory of ship machinery "Rikard Benčić". When the factory failed in the 90s of the 20th century, the building was abandoned and left to devastation and deterioration.
Within the capital city project "Rijeka – European Capital of Culture 2020", the building will be assigned a new purpose and it will become the Children's House – an institution in which the youngest will be acquainted with activities and programmes connected with culture.
The works on reconstruction of the Brick Building include removing of the complete load bearing and non-load bearing structure except for the 4 outer brick walls which distinguish this facility. After the installation of the heavy scaffold and bracing of the external walls, construction of the new reinforced-concrete structure will start according to the "house-in-house" principle, with the ground floor + 3 floors, which is fixed to the existing walls by anchors. The fifth level is executed as a steel structure with the sheet lining. A part of the piles of the original steel load bearing structure is used in the new structure as a mask of the new load bearing piles, while the rest was donated to the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka.

The project is co-financed by the EU funds.
